Music from France and America
Introduction
Paris at the turn of the last century provided a melting-pot of creativity from which

second half mainly features American composers, many of whom studied in Paris.

(1 hour programme)
Faure's melodic gift is undisputable, and his influence was far-reaching. Taught by
Saent-Saens, Faure was himself a gifted teacher, and this programme includes works by
his pupils and admirers.
Les Six - Works for flute and piano
Milhaud - Sonatine
Honegger - Danse de La Chevre
Auric - Aria
Durey - Sonatina
Tailleferre - Pastorale
Poulenc - Sonata for flute and piano
This programme is based on the works of 'Les Six', a group of French composers lead
by Satie and Cocteau. Les Six turned their backs on excessive romanticism, and their
music has a beautiful freshness.

French flute concertos
Jaques Ibert (1890-1962) - Flute Concerto 21'
Cecile Chaminade - Concertino 9'
Kathryn gave a magnificent performance of Ibert's Flute Concerto earlier this year.
Ibert's virtuosic Concerto ranges from the playful to the very beautiful - with an
exquisite melody in the slow movement.
Cecile Chaminade's (1857-1944) Concertino is a delightful work, and is a popular work
in the flute repertoire.
