Melanie Marshall is frequently hailed as one of this country’s most versatile artists. Her style encompasses jazz, opera, oratorio, musical theatre and cabaret and she has performed and recorded in Britain and abroad with such noted conductors as Sir Simon Rattle, Carl Davis, Libor Pesek, Kent Nagano, Trevor Pinnock, Ivor Bolton and orchestras including the Philharmonia, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, The London Symphony Orchestra, Royal Philharmonic and all the BBC orchestras.
In 1991, Melanie made her debut singing at New York’s Carnegie Hall, performing Dr John Rutter’s Distant Land. In June 2001, she returned there to give the US premiere of Feel the Spirit - a cycle of seven Negro spirituals specially arranged for her (with chorus & orchestra) by Dr John Rutter.
Apart from her many performances in musical theatre, Melanie has also appeared In BBC 2’s concert version of Oklahoma in the 2002 Proms, made her debut in the

Bridgewater Hall singing as the guest of the Manchester Boy’s Choir and has performed twice with the Liverpool Philharmonic singing Gershwin. She has toured with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Carl Davis and appeared twice at the Wigmore Hall, the second time taking part in Songbook ’99 with Sarah Walker.
She has made numerous recordings including Wonderful Town and Porgy and Bess both conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, Dido and Aeneas conducted by Ivor Bolton, Belshazzaar, conducted by Trevor Pinnock, The White House Cantata conducted by Kent Nagano and her first solo album Cocktail was given the accolade of a five star rating by BBC Music Magazine. Melanie also recorded Feel The Spirit and Distant Land with Dr John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers. She is a regular contributor to Friday Night is Music Night, In Tune and the BBC’s Songs of Praise. She has also shown her penchant for comedy and opera starring as the Diva in The Fat Lady Sings, which she toured with Kit and The Widow.
In 2004 Melanie appeared with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra at the Festival Hall and returned to take part in their Christmas concert in 2005 at Fairfield Halls, Croydon. Most recently, she performed Handel’s Messiah to a capacity audience with the Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra under Dr John Rutter.
Engagements for 2007 include a recording of the Messiah with Dr John Rutter, a recording of Bernstein’s West Side Story for Universal and a specially commissioned piece by Mark-Anthony Turnage, About Water, for the re-opening of London’s Royal Festival Hall.
Melanie recently appeared in Sir Trevor Nunn’s critically acclaimed production of Porgy & Bess at the Savoy Theatre, London playing the role of Maria.
