February 29th 2012 marked the first day of the Galliard Ensemble’s exciting new position as Wind Quintet- in-Residence at Highgate School, London. The Galliard Ensemble is thrilled with this new collaboration. The day began with masterclasses where students played in front of their friends and were offered friendly guidance and advice, with demonstrations from members of the Galliard Ensemble. Post-lunch the students got to play with members of the ensemble and worked on a couple of pieces before performing them in an informal concert at the end of the session. The day ended with a full evening Galliard concert. “We had a very fun and productive day at Highgate School. We were really struck by the high standard of playing and by how nice and forthcoming and interested (and interesting)! the children are. They are really delightful kids! We had a great time working with them and are very much looking forward to our future collaborations. The super-talented head of Woodwind and Percussion at Highgate School (and director of the innovative chamber group, Chroma), Stuart King has appeared as guest clarinettist and bass clarinettist with the Galliard Ensemble and we are extremely happy to be working with him again. The day ended with an evening concert given by us, which featured Paul Patterson's Comedy for Five Winds. We were very privileged that Paul attended the concert and gave an entertaining introduction to his piece. The concert also featured two pieces from our new recording for Deux-Elles which was recorded in St Michael's Church, Highgate." Kathryn. [TOP] |

The Galliard Ensemble's much anticipated new CD for Deux-Elles will soon be released. The CD features gorgeous French chamber music for wind quintet. Its release this year ties in with the celebrations of the centenary of Jean Francaix. Jean Francaix's music epitomises the vibrant playfulness characteristic of much French 20th century chamber repertoire, and this aesthetic is clearly apparent in his effervescent Quintet No.1. Also on the CD is Bozza's brilliantly virtuosic Scherzo and Milhaud's Cheminée du Roi René which is an evocative work full of character, describing, in music, a day in the life of King René (which included some jousting and hunting). Pierne's beautiful Pastorale is haunting and evocative. Paul Taffanel's symphonic and Romantic Wind Quintet displays technical virtuosity and operatic moments and reflects the talent of this wonderful French flautist/composer/conductor who is regarded as the Father of the modern flute.
